I believe there are a few methods of doing so, however my work computer doesnt have the access to let me test them. I do know for a fact, that if you do a WHOIS search for the domain name, you can often find the ip adresss and other information on the site of your choice.

Just type in WHOIS in google, and it will bring up some WHOIS search databases. I'll reply again if I find those other ways how.

The nice lady who made this site gives her software away free. I think it works better than a WHOIS search.

MS command is not very good. You should try console2. It's free.

Yes, to achive the goal is good, but to have good tools is my aim.
I just don't like the way the cmd.exe works. I prefer a GOOD console so I use console2.

console2 works like cmd.exe, but has tabs for different consoles (working directories). In it you can type any command that you can run from Start>Run or Start>Run>Command, for example, nslookpu to get an IP address. You can get "console2" from sourseforge.net.

Hi Subashini,
I tried getting the IP address the way you suggested through 'command', I never knew it was so easy..Thanks !

Do you know what 'ns' in 'nslookup' stands for?

Name Server Lookup.
Re: DNS (Domain Name System).
BTW, to get the IP address from Windows simply run the command
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. PING {Web Address}
This will resolve the address for you even if the Ping fails. You will need to run it from a Command line of some form rather than simply the Run option from Start or you will lose the results before you can read them.

You can use alternative console or command line facilities, but there's absolutely no reason you need to just for this.

The WHOIS lookup not necessarily gives you the geographical location of the hosting. The simple way is to use one of those online geoIP lookup services such as GeoIP lookup and others.

Good luck!

Windows XP caches for 1 day:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318803

IE4+ caches DNS for 30 minutes:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q263/5/58.ASP

The first attempt to resolve each unique hostname would be the longest wait which should be fairly fast to begin with unless you have alot of latency to your DNS server. After it is cached there should not be any noticable difference between using an IP or using the Fully Qualified Domain Name.

Also, you will find websites that are hosted on the same server as others and trying to find the page using the IP address will fail or display the site which is configured to be the "Default" site if no matching host header is found. The server hosting the multiple sites only knows what website to open based on the FQDN requested in the URL.

If you read the other posts you'll see that that method doesn't always work. I expect it will work with fewer and fewer as time goes on as sites protect themselves more tightly from malicious attacks and scanning.
