Advice on Infrastructure career field

I really want to be a network admin or whatever deals with infrastructure, but I keep hearing that it is a competitive area and that it's constantly being outsourced. What I'd like to know is did any of you run into difficulties in building your career in this field and do you agree what i've been told and what strategies or advice can you give me? I would really appreciate some insight from people who are already in the field.
