Windows Defender

For the last month, my p.c. has been crashing within 15 minutes from
start-up. I have been going through all the possible reasons and have finally
identified Windows Defender as the instigator (but maybe not the reason) of
these crashes. What happens is this:

When Windows Defender starts, it creates a file called TMP000000 followed by
a random set of numbers and upper-case letters in the Temp sub-folder of the
main WINDOWS folder. This file is 512kb size and has the file type as File.

When the scan is running it works fine until it reaches the file
HKLM\Software\Classes\pcast then it crashes. The computer freezes and will
not accept any further instructions, however the pointer still moves around
the screen.

I am at a loss to know what to do to get my machine working properly again.

It crashed *only* when WD is running?
What happens if you run WD in safe mode?
Have you tried running another anti-malware product, like SpyBot S&D or
SuperAntiSpyware?
Have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling Windows Defender?

Select your language from the Tree View on the left, then select Windows. In
Windows, select your version and find an applicable group there.
