I'm trying to repair an installation of MS Visual Studio .Net 2003, but if I
try to install prerequisites (Step 1) or Visual Studio .Net (Step 2), it
launches a Spanish install of the Intel Chipset and then goes no further. Can
anyone help me round this please?

The Installshield message is: "El programa de instalacion Intel(R) Chipset
Software Installation Utility esta preparando el Asistente InstallShield(R),
el cual le orientara a traves del resto del proceso de instalacion. Espere
unos instantes"

Followed by a blue backgrounded window containing the text: "Intel(R)
Chipset Software Insatllation Utility Version 4.20 Build 1006"

These two windows disappear and installation/repair proceeds no further.

The machine is a Hi-grade Computers PLC machine P4 2.66GHz 512MB RAM

Hi Gus,

I'm not sure this is the case, but you may have a corrupt windows
installer and you might need to reinstall it. You should be able to
download it from Microsoft.

Hi Morten,

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately this wasn't the cause of the
problem (which I still can't identify), but thanks for your reply in any case.

Best Regards,

Gus

Gus,

I'm having the same problem with the installer as stated above (same
installshield message). If you find a resolution, please let me know.
Likewise, if I find something that works, I'll let you know.

Count me in as yet another person with this problem. A few other people at
my company have also had this problem. I don't have time today, but I'm
going to have to do the sit on the phone with Microsoft for an hour or two
thing tomorrow. Someone said it had something to do with a registry key, but
didn't have the details. It would probably save Microsoft some time to enter
this into the knowledge base. ;)

I just got off the phone with Microsoft support. For some reason, with XP
Pro SP 2, there is a registry key that gets set that shouldn't be. This
causes confusion between the setup.exe that you need to run for .NET and the
setup.exe contained in this registry key. To fix, clear out this registry
key prior to running setup.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\App
Paths\setup.exe\(Default)

It should be blank, mine was set to "C:\DRIVERS\OTHER\SETUP.EXE".

Hopefully this save someone else some grief!
