Comparing values in table - character set utf8

Hi,
As I understand it, when the character set is set to utf8, comparisons are not case insensitive. So, I would like to know as how to comparisons should be done in that case? i.e. I wouldn't like to select everything from the table and then compare it through coding. I am looking for some solution which will not force me do so.
