first, update Thunderbird. You're using a very, very old version.
The current version is 1.5.0.4, and it contains lots of bug and
security features.

Next, what browser are you using? If FF, then why aren't you using its
popup blocker to block sites.

Third: Some sites have figured out how to by-pass popup blockers.

Fourth: It depends on the type of popup it is. Is it a flash popup,
is it a pop under, or pop down, or other.

Sounds like spyware, a quick googling confirms this. Don't blame it on the
sites you visit or Javascript at all. Outerinfo is running a program on your
computer. All the best with the cleanup

I'm not blaming it on anything right now, since I don't know what causes
it... the weird thing is, I'm even getting them (sometimes) when I
visit my own site!!! just got one that on the title it says:

http://ad.oinadserver.com/iframe3?AAA.. etc.. (long query string..)

this is on IE6, on FF don't get pop-ups.. (yes, have pop-ups blocked on
my FF..)

thank you..

I just realized what it is.. I get pop-up ads when loading LOCAL files
with IE... some evil goon installed some stuff on my machine that
opens these ads, just got one from "outerinfo".... unbelievable.. one
of them which contained an img in a resizable window I was able to grab
src code, searched for string in my computer related to code I found in
it, but nothing.. then went CP --add/remove programs, and found
something there I had not seen before: Cowabanga.exe -- next to it it
said, "used seldom" -- I uninstalled that and viola -- pop-ups gone..
incredible that folks have the gall to install stuff like that on your
machine -- and incredible that OS's enable remote installation like that
w/o owner's say-so (& I do the Windows upgrade thing regularly.. am on
W2k..) anybody what you can do preven this?

thank you..

just curious, how do you know what version of TB I'm using? (and how do
you know I'm using TB at all? :) will follow your advice, I installed
it at my new job and noticed it's different from version I have at
home.. question: do I uninstall current installation first? (copied
config/data files to my desktop just in case, data (messages, news group
subscriptions, address book, etc.) should be preserved, right?

thank you..
