Hello, i was hoping someone in this group can give me a pointer in the
right direction.

I have no knowledge whatsoever about programming but am keen to learn.
I want to learn a language which i can perhaps earn a few pennys with
in my spare time. I am not sure if the latest languages require
knowledge of the older languages?.....can anyone give me a good
starting reference?.....i of course want to learn the latest language/s
so that i stand the best chance of keeping up to date and need to know
what language/s i must learn to eventually get to this level as soon as
possible. If anyone can provide a good link to free online courses for
newbees i would apreciate it.

many thanks in advance.......A

You may want to learn C because it works on any system (including
Xbox).
The group alt.comp.lang.learn.c-c++ may be a better group for you.
( My Email adress does not work )

Well, if you look at the current job reqs, you might be surprised at just
how hard it is to make a penny with programming languages of any sort.

-Employer- Seeking entry level employee with 4 year degree plus 4 years
experience for minimum wage.

Not to mention that whole India / H-1B issue. The main issue with work
that could be performed by anyone anywhere, is that you are in competition
with everyone everywhere. The new "global" economy as it were. Well,
anyone in this case is limited to those who can read, write, and some
typing of sorts.

But to answer the question, it is unlikely you'll find a job req with only
ONE language requirement. If you're gonna do javascript, you most likely
need html as well. And perl and cgi-bin methodologies might also apply.
Along with php, python, sql, and a variety of other parts to make a whole.
You might just think you're doing a "website", but they're wanting an
order entry, distribution, accounting, discussion forum, etc. system(s),
which are fully automated and they wanted it yesterday.

Even with just C, you'll need to know several other things before you can
really do anything. At least for money. Not many people/employers care
for dos based or ncurses type interfaces much these days. And there's
only so much batch processing one can do before you automate yourself out
of work over and over again.
