I am stuck! Please help

It might be difficult to explain the problem via email, but I will try.

I have a Win 2003 Enterprise server running with the only purpose of a membership web site that uses SQL server 2000 database. I had the site for over 5 years, but the problem started about 6 months ago. At random times (at least I have not found yet any particular time or event when it happens), the Web site Times-out and so the SQL server. Everything takes about 1-3 minutes and then everything is back to normal. I receive all timeout errors via email and I can tell when exactly happens. It may not happen some days at all, some days it may happen 7-8 times.

I have ran Performance Monitor and SQL Profiler during these problem times and I have log files that the results below. I am attaching a few graphics too. This does not particularly happen when there are a lot of users on the site. It might happen in the middle of the night when there is hardly anyone. I am puzzled by the fact that suddenly Web Service\Current Anonymous Users\_Total suddenly increases 3-4 times (somtimes even more) and at the same time Process\%Processor time\SQL Server decreases to almost 0%. Almost all pages are using the SQL server, so more connections would mean more work for the SQL server...

Now, I found recently that sometime (not always) when I the problem appears, the application pool, w3wp takes a lot of Processor time. In this case I keep receiving errors until I end the application pool process from Task Manager; then a new application pool process starts up and everything is back to normal. That made me think that there is something that affects the application pool and beacuse of that, the requests to the SQL server are not sent, so the pages timeout; however, I am not sure how to figure out what exactly affects the application pool.

I have a couple of dump files where that report the application pool crash. I tried to open them with Debugging tools for Windows, but it seems I get an error reading it. I am not familiar with reading dump files, so I might be doing something wrong. I am attaching the results in a text file.

That is where I am now. If you have any ideas and you can point me where to look for a solution, please let me know.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this email and help me out! I

Thank you!

re: w3wp Problem PLEASE HELP!

Are you running SQL Server and IIS on the same server? Also, have you made sure that your SQL server has the latest patches from Microsoft?
