Corrupt Excel File

I have a user who was working on an Excel 2007 file from a thumbdrive.. all of a suddem the file will not open and generates the following error:

"Excel cannot open the file 'filename.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file. (OK)"

I hit Ctrl-Shift-i to get the code for that error (101590)

Any ideas how to repair?

I think you need to advise him about working with backups.

I don't mean to be flippant. That's actually very important advice that they will benefit from many times.

I'm not aware of any software that rescues Excel files. I doubt any can rescue all problems.

Just recently had another thread about this:

My reply there is your only hope outside of forensic recovery - if possible!

1.Start>Run>Write "excel /A" and then try to open the document - Does it work?
2.Try to rename the file to something shorter
3.Try to rename the file to something shorter and extension to .xls
4.Start>Run>Write "excel /S" and then try to open the document - Does it work?
5.Remove everything from C:\windows\temp directory then reboot.

halyung,
Respectfully, none of what you have suggested goes beyond the link I have posted.
