MS Excel question regarding grouping and sorting

I have a MS Excel question. I have the 2013 version I believe.
I have about 300 rows of data with several columns and a few of the rows are grouped together. However, when I sort my selected data that has the grouped rows in it, it sorts just fine but the groups stay with the row numbers rather than the data. So different rows are now grouped that I don't want to be grouped.
I hope this makes sense, I googled it and had no luck. I also worked with a coworker who has IT experience and still no luck, he recommended coming here. I have monkeyed around with the "Outline" menu, advanced sorting, regular sorting, cell formatting, nothing has helped.
Thanks in advance!
