Position title: IMS Database/VSAM Administrator
Summary:
This position is responsible for supporting and directing all functions
associated with the efficient design, implementation, integrity,
maintenance, availability, and use of mainframe databases (IMS). This
position also provides support for VSAM DASD resource management and
supports the access of mainframe information by distributed systems and
processes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Keep abreast of current technologies and techniques with the
objective to identify areas of improvement within the sphere of
responsibility.
· Build and maintain a strong partnership with developers and
application management in order to provide database technical
leadership, support, and identify opportunities for application
optimization.
· Actively participate in the design and development process with
Information Systems and other department staff as the needs relate to
technologies supported through this position.
· Monitor and optimize file structures. Proactively monitor
performance and capacity, identify areas of needed adjustment,
recommend plan of action, and coordinate implementation.
· Available 24X7 for on-call system support. Positive membership in
the technical systems support team and active contributor to timely
diagnosis and resolution of system incidents. Provide production
support of mission critical systems and primary point of contact for
coordination and resolution of IMS and VSAM issues with internal and
external technical support.
· Effectively gather and communicate facts and ideas orally and in
written form when clarifying understanding, answering questions,
instructing, providing information, status communication, and preparing
documentation.
· Perform analysis, design, and implementation of IMS and VSAM data
structures that support the companies information needs. Analyze
business application requirements and develop specifications for
database construction and maintenance. Develop logical data models,
derive physical database designs, following through to eventual
physical database creation.
· Provide management with metrics and indicators of key areas within
the domain of responsibility.
· Identify and implement needed backup and recovery processes.
Collaborate with the Technical Support team to ensure robust backup and
disaster recovery procedures are maintained and checked.
· Appropriately automate the information processing and problem alert
steps within this position's sphere of responsibility.
· Provide standards for and control the administration of the
mainframe databases and their use.
· Determine the data access rules and monitor security.
· Promote procedures for accurate, complete, and timely updates of the
databases.
· Provide training and/or problem solving assistance as required.
Data Administration:
· Maintain the Data Dictionary (Datamanager) as a viable support
product for Information Systems, making changes/enhancements or
applying maintenance as needed.
· Ensure that all database structures, data definitions, copybooks,
programs, JCL, reports, transactions, terms and data elements (or meta
data) within sphere of responsibility is managed on the Data Dictionary
(Datamanager).
· Support guidelines for naming conventions and documentation
standards in the Data Dictionary.
· Maintain the rules for references identifying usage and change
relationships within the Data Dictionary.
Information Access Services:
· Maintain and administer the technology used (Websphere Information
Integrator Classic Federation) to provide mainframe data access to the
distributed and desktop environment.
· Monitor those processes that access the mainframe data for
consistency between systems.
Requirements:
· Minimum three years IMS DBA including HALDB experience
· Minimum one year VSAM administration experience
· A Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
· Experience in the various aspects of application programming, and
systems analysis.
· Support experience with IMS and VSAM file structures
· A broad level of experience in the corporate information systems
needs.
· Ability to quickly assimilate new applications and platforms.
· Strong logic and organization skills
· Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
· Strong interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills.
· Mainframe and distributed information integration experience.
· Data warehouse development experience a plus
· Meta-data repository experience a plus
· Experience with database design, modeling, and implementation of new
structures
· An active team player willing to lead and follow when needed
· A proven track record of proactive data capacity planning and
maintenance
· Application programming and data administration experience.
· Experience in performance tuning, backup, and recovery.
· A high level of technical expertise coupled with the ability to
coordinate, consult and review database efforts while arbitrating
conflicts of differing and contradicting requirements.
Knowledge/experience with the following software:
· IMS administration and usage
· IMS High Availability Database Conversion Aid
· VSAM administration and usage
· COBOL, Vision Results (DYL), and other programming languages
· IBM JCL
· BMC and other third-party database performance, monitoring, and
system status products
· IBM Websphere Information Integrator Classic Federation
· Datamanager Data Dictionary or other meta-data repository preferred
