Calibre software download and it does not open program

I am trying to download the Calibre e-book management system and keep getting the following error message: "Python function terminated unexpectedly. NUL file missing in windows. This indicates a corrupted windows. You should contact Mircrosoft for assistance and/or follow the steps described here: http://bytes.com/topic/net/answers/264804-compile-error-null-device-missing (Error code: 1)"

I have also run my anti-virus software twice to get rid of any viruses and I still can't run the Calibre program. Can you help me?

a possible solution (not tried) is:
- de-install software
- follow this steps
- re-install

I had the exact same problem. Same error. Same everything. I deleted Calibre, reinstalled Calibre, updated Calibre, reinstalled my windows 7 operating system 3 times. Nothing fixed it. Not the 32bit Calibre, not the 64bit Calibre, not reinstalling windows. Nothing worked! No luck whatsoever. Right up until I downloaded the latest TRIAL version of Kaspersky pure 3.0, updated the virus definitions then scanned my pc.

Kaspersky found "Rootkit.Boot.Cidox.b" on my p.c. (even reinstalling windows did not remover this virus!). After reboot and virus removal, Kaspersky then ran its "post-infection Microsoft windows troubleshooting" additional tool (which repairs problems caused by the rootkit viruses) and... tada... all is well. Calibre started up up perfectly.

I'll leave it to the techies to explain why that particular rootkit interfered with Calibre's / python's ability to access the null files.

Do you have Python installed in your computer? If yes, there may be version mismatch.
