It sounds like you're interested in looking into using a TemplateField. It will let you specify how your data appears when a user is editing a row.

Tnx a Lot. actually i had a wrong understanding of what i wanted to do.... but also i dont wanted to have a edit button in my grid what i wanted is when a user will select a row(he can click anywhere on the row) a onselectedindexchanged will be fired. and a drop down will apear in the row. user will select a nea value from the drop down and again onindexchanged will be fired and value will be updated and gropdown will go away.

A little extension to the standard asp.net gridview can achieve the goal of single click and double click events in gridview. One post that helps is Asp.net custom gridview with single click and double click row events

Hope this helps.
