Select Top ... Order By ...

Hi,

I'm trying, without success, to get an ordered and paged list from a query. (I'm wrinting in ASP).

This works:

rs.Source = "SELECT * FROM Contents WHERE Category = Pictures ORDER BY EventDate ASC"

This works also (it lists the first 3 items):

rs.Source = "SELECT TOP 3 * FROM Contents WHERE Category = Pictures"

But if I try to use TOP and ORDER BY clauses in the same string such as:

rs.Source = SELECT TOP 3 * FROM Contents WHERE Category = Pictures ORDER BY EventDate ASC"

the TOP clause is ignored.

Thank you very much.

Hi, try this:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. SELECT * FROM Contents
  2. WHERE contentsID IN (SELECT TOP 3 contentsID FROM Contents WHERE Category = Pictures)
  3. ORDER BY EventDate ASC
  4.
contentsID would be the primary key for the contents table
