Locking Access and Pricing For A Project?

I have created a database that I am going to email to the customer to
preview. How can I lock the software so the customer does not take it
and use it without paying me. I tried to setting allow additions/
deletions on the form but that kept my form from showing?

Also this is the first time I have created a database for anybody and
would like to know what I tell him the price will be if he likes the
preview? I don't want too ask to much but I don't want to ask too
little either

All help is greatly appreciated

While I may be skilled enough to do something such as you describe I
never have. I just trust people.

Based on a careful analysis of the information you have provided I
would say that $ 19287.43 would be right on.

I agree with Lyle.

Based on my limited experience, companies tend to be legal with their
licenses, some are fanatical about it. What does it benefit a company
to be using illegal software?

What you might want to make sure you do is send an MDE, not MDB. Unless
they are paying for your code, the product is what you are selling.

I suppose you could put some code in it to limit the number of records.
Also check out Directives,Compiler in help. You could create a #Const
for Demo = True/False. Then you are getting away from trust.

Lyle's price is the exact same figure I arrived at.

Is this for a friend, a small business, a big business, one that you
will sell to others? Will you be doing enhancements? How much work
have you put into it? How valuable is it to him or other companies?
How valuable is your time? You don't want to price it so high he'll
pass on it yet not so low you beome a slave to the project. You do have
to pay taxes, and there's overhead. What do you think is fair? You
might want to say "I worked x amount of hours on this project. My
hourly rate is y dollars. My price for this work (if you want to give a
discount) is z dollars. I will do additional work at my current rate".
You really should negotiate beforehand. Live and learn, I guess.

If I feel that I need to send a customer a limited edition, I send a thirty
day trial. I use a method where the customer can not overcome the thirty day
constraint by turning back his system time.

Have the customer remove the battery from his computer and mail it to me
before he can get a copy of the application.

So why post an utterly useless reply? All you've said is "I have a method
of doing what you want". Why bother? I think we all know the answer to
that.

To the OP: before contacting "Steve" you'd be wise to read this:

You are nothing but a jerk! I wouldn't give you the time of day.

I have a viable method of securing a thirty day demo but am not about to
share it with Keith Wilby.

Or anyone else, so why bother posting? This forum is for exchange of ideas
FOC, you are showing your true colours yet again with the pathetic
name-calling. Go away for another year Steve, it was nice without you.

Tools available from sites such as sysinternals.com can crack any method you use to
store a future date anywhere on a system such as in the registry or a file. Unless
it's encrypted. But even then if you delete the date from wherever it's stored your
app may think it's just installed.

Thus I prefer to limit the number of records in one key table such as 5 units or 50
volunteers but allow unlimited access for everything else. Once I get paid then I
email them an encrypted file containing the number of records they are licensed for
as well as their company name which goes on the bottom of every page of every report.

For more of my thoughts on this topic see the "Copy protection or how to safely
distribute a demo Microsoft Access Application" page at

I'm starting to wonder whether that year of peace was because
