User Deleted Secured.mdw - now what do I do?

OK - I'm not an access dude anymore... 'beer' with me.

One of my clients thought they were 'doing the right thing' and
cleansed their access program folders. Now, when they attempt to open
their database - they get:
Microsoft Access couldn't find the file ...path...\Secured.mdw. this
file is required for startup.

OK - as you know most users... they don't have a good backup, they
deleted the one I created for them and I am really frustrated with
them.

What get's done - to make this thing work for them again?

Help

Give them a new copy of your file.
They may have to add users to groups, but that's a small price to pay

So you/they didn't record the information you/they used to setup the
workgroup file? If you/they did, as you/they should have, you/they could
then just recreate the workgroup file again using the same information.

Otherwise, the only other way I can see is using a crack to break the
security, create a new workgroup and join it, import all your objects to
a new database and reapply your permissions.

Oh, and back it up! :)

OK - I'm going to have to look at the cracking aspect.

Anyone know a good tool for cracking the database? Anyone know someone
I could send it to .. to get the security removed from ... I am willing
to make them pay for a commercial fix.

I don't have the original secured.mdw, they've misplaced all their
original documentation, they didn't do the backups as I required - and
now I have to find the fix to their issue.

If someone can suggest a cracker or a company that can break in and
export the data - they are willing to pay.

I haven't used one of these programs myself, but I just wanted to say if I
was in your situation I would pay for the program myself (after getting a
recommendation from someone here as to which one) and do it myself. You can
then charge this work on as you see fit.
I don't believe they are that expensive, and it would be useful for you as a
developer to have this tool. If you pay someone else - you loose out on
this valuable experience. Just make sure you are sure that the program
works for your version of Access and really will provide a crack for
user-level security regardless of the fact that the mdw file is missing.

I can send you a crack if you like. It's only 18Kb. It works with
Access95-2000.. may work with later version but I haven't tried. Best of
all it's free.

re: User Deleted Secured.mdw - now what do I do?

Sergei Gavrilov had a good password recovery package for Access 97 (would
re-create the MDW, if I remember correctly), which he made freely
downloadable from his site. I believe I have a link to his site in the
Resources section at http://ntaccess.tripod.com.

But I think he may not have continued in that business. He also does
developer tools and utilities, and, my guess is, decided there was more
future in "tools" than in "cracks".

There are a number of other people who COULD crack a database, but will not,
as a matter of principle. They say that they have no failproof way to verify
that the person who wants the crack is actually the undisputed owner and
they are not willing to assume the potential liability. If you had in mind
asking me, don't bother, because they have asked me NOT to pass on their
names. They think they have better things to do than to waste time
responding "I am sorry you have the problem, but I just don't do that
work.*" to pleas from distraught users.

elected I will not serve" or some equally final pronouncement.

Direct link http://accesstools.narod.ru/

Didn't see anything about a tool like you mentioned.

re: User Deleted Secured.mdw - now what do I do?

Hi Everyone!

First - I want to thank each and everyone for their efforts. I knew
it would be against policy to 'hack' a secured database - but I
had to try.

Now - the good news. I did find a company
[http://www.etechrecovery.com/] that was able to remove all security
from the database. They accomplished the task in about five minutes (I
sent them the zipped database via FTP, they provided pix/images as
proof, I paid the bill and they allowed me to FTP the file back down).

I couldn't do it myself - I tried everything suggested, and the db was
encrypted.

They charged $99 - which was well worth the effort.
