Best method of remote access?

Hi all,

I'm investigating a remote access solution for a client. Five employees need
to work from home on an Access 2K split db. It's all working well on the
LAN, but I wonder what is the best solution for remote access?

-I've read that VPN won't work due to speed and corruption issues.
-Terminal Services/Remote Desktop worked well during my tests on my XP
boxes, but wondering about security issues (sensitive data will be
transmitted), and issues with firewalls, routers and the like
-What about other products like pcAnywhere, or open source?

Ideas greatly appreciated!

D

I am using Citrix MetaFrameXP for the remote users (connected via WAN) to
use an A2K2 Front-End with MS-SQL2K Back-End and it seems to work reasonably
well.

In your case, you probably need to talk to your network people regarding
security / encryption / firewalls / etc ...

D,
We've been running A2K front end / A2K backend on Windows2000 Terminal
Server for several months, as many as 15 users. There were some security
issues, and some Win2K issues ( see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=818528 for example), but
right now the app seems very stable. Fast, even using dialup, if you follow
the suggestions at http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/performancefaq.htm.
pcAnywhere will drive you crazy.

Thanks, John, for the multi-user caveat, and for warning me off of
pcAnywhere (I cringed when my client suggested it). I am following the
performance guidelines (as should everyone), so it should be fast as you
say. What about firewalls, routers, etc, with TS? Any potential hurdles to
account for?

As always, many thanks to all who replied,

D

re: Best method of remote access?

D,
I'm not the hardware part of the equation, but I know that only one out of
about 55 users set up so far has been unable to connect first time, and I
don't know what the resolution was. Those without XP use the downloaded
Remote Desktop Connection client. We're just about to try our first Mac
user, should be interesting. Main hurdles have been printers - older
printers with parallel cable connections are definitely preferred by
Windows2000. We have had some luck substituting drivers (HP6 driver for an
HP1200, for example). Other stumble is the 256 color limit - if you have
embedded graphics in your app, they may show up looking very garish. If so,
try saving them as 256 color .bmp and then re-inserting them into your
forms/reports.
Good luck,
John

Thanks for sharing, John. Indispensible info.

Good luck with the Mac.

What spec terminal server? (CPU/RAM/HDD) I may be having to build one
pretty soon for about that many users.

re: Best method of remote access?

Hi D,

Try using RemotePC ((http://www.ibackup.com/remote_access/). It is
fast, reliable and works behind most firewalls and proxy servers using
RemotePC communication servers.
It is very secure as the entire communication is encrypted using
128-bit CRY/SAL to ensure security during remote access.

Hi D,

RemotePC doesn't use 128-bit CRY/SAL, it uses 128-bit RC4/SSL to
ensure security during remote access.
