Default MDE, how long should it take?

We are starting to implement security in an Access DB (Access 2000 and
2003 front ends, SQL 2005 back end via DSN).

The problem (or maybe not??) is that when I tried to create an MDE
file, it took over 2 hours, keeping the CPU at 99%. I finally gave up
around that time and killed the msaccess process.

We have a lot of Reports and forms....about what is the normal time? I
can make an MDE of an empty DB without any problems. It just happens

Thanks and cheers,

Rich

It oughtn't take much longer to create the MDE than it would take to
compact the source MDB file.

Run a decompile on the MDB, then compact, then compile it and see if
any errors pop up.

I have experienced this once in A97. I had a large front end (15Mb) that over
time progressively took longer and longer to produce an MDE, to the point that
it would take around 45 minutes to create the file. The MDE was always created
successfully, it just took forever.

Decompiling the mdb, importing everything to a clean file or using
SaveAsText/LoadFromText made no difference. This was the only file that
exhibited the problem, and the only difference with the file is that it was the
only db I was working on at the time that had Access security implemented,
although I have no idea whether this contributed to the problem.

As part of my annual(ish) maintenance I ended up blowing away the drive and
reinstalling the OS (Win2K) and reinstalling Access 97/2K/2K2. As soon as this
was done, the time taken to produce the MDE for this file dropped to approx 25
seconds and I have had no further problems.

It might pay you to reinstall Access and see if it helps.
