.....any body out there..................?

I am desperately seeking ur views and help. guide me please.....

.......a 37 year old male from india, served 19 years in the Air Force as junior engineer(electronics) and later as system admin, network manager and "small scale" programmer.

I was doing my MSc(CS), and then got an offer from my institute to teach university students, the course of computer science and .net (C# and ASP.net),sql etc - initially, and then to start coding, as the firm has software development division also.I took up the offer. My employer is now saying that my age is too much to start coding and it's better to go for marketing and implementing the products of the firm. (its a very small firm -2 programmers - it has no much new projects.).

I am really ready to work hard and has good confidence in my logical and analytical abilities. Also with teaching, i could achieve a better command over the .net/sql language concepts. But, the remarks by my employer has totally disappointed me and am loosing my confidence. What should i do? go as he is suggesting or find a new company. I have all my passion towards coding - but i have no experience to show. i am confused. utterly. - kindly throw some light. - Am I employable at this age ?.

I personally think you are very employable at your age. If you heart is with programming and this company is not willing to let you do that then I personally think that you should start to look around and find a company that will. I'm not telling you to do anything so please don't quit your job because of what I or anyone else tells you.

Your age may play a factor in it, but its not like you are 67 trying to get into a programming job. Pursue what you want to do!

I would say, learn programming in your spare time, and create some programs that show your knowledge. Then go find another job, only quit the one you have now, when you're sure you'll get another one, and you're sure you want to do that job. Of course that's just the opinion of someone that is is less then half your age.

As an Indian, I would suggest you that it would be good for you if you try for some sort of administration job in some University.

Universities (especially the Engineering Colleges in Punjab) always prefer some administrator who is from defense background. As they are supposed to be extremely disciplined, and thus can tech some discipline to the students.

And as far as your coding interest is concerned, University Labs are best to practice that.

I really prefer to do something like that. Teaching electronics and CS to the students during day time, then guiding them in playing Volleyball during evenings and then sticking to the Computer lab at night with a team of geeks. ;) .... running Bhangra classes in the weekends... :D

But anyways, you are 37, that doesn't mean its not the time to start something. Just do whatever you want to do. Don't compromise according to what you get first.

I hope I didn't give you any wrong advice.

Regards

Ofcourse you can be a programmer and AGE doesn’t mater to be a programmer, but why you are expecting to work under some management? Earn money from your current job (already good position in your job role (“network manager and "small scale" programmer.”) and do your C# programming as part-time. Get some betting project from website and do your self (no manager for you and it’s only you).

Note: Mindset is the basic problem for everyone. If you are in big position in one field then it’s hard to be starting your carrier from the base in other field. Good luck.

It does not matter what your employer believes what you should do
You can do anything you choose.

Would you rather do something your employer likes?
Or do something that you like with a passion?

I beleive that you are employable until you decide not to be

Hi kash072

According to me if you are passionate about programming then you should carryon...At the end of the day its not the AGE its the MILAGE that matters..Its not like under 15 or 20 cricket team,, Its game called programming and anybody can play this game no matter of age or language they know..Dont think that you are old to start programming instead think that you have 25-30 years more to play this game called programming..Stop listening to all such stupid people and keep rocking in programming..

And being an Indian, I beg Debasisdas not to even think about this. And don't tell people that this is possible.

Hey kash072,

Your first post showed that you were really miserable, and you disparately needed some advice. So we all advised you the best we could.

You did not post back for days. And when you posted, you said, "My system got burned out in a lightning". Tell me one thing, how did you come up with such a nice sounding excuse? When you have to make an excuse, make it sound genuine, instead of cool and interesting.

And in the end you said, "Please send in more of your guidance."
Dude, for any person reading this, this much is enough to make him understand that 37 is not a bad age to learn programming. And you still need more?

Then you sent me a PM, saying, "pls send in more of your ideas and guidlines to thinkbig4success@[some-XYZ-domain].com"
While asking for help, don't sound like spammers!

You should use an email id like "i_need_help@[some-XYZ-domain].com". The one you used sounds like you really are an optimistic person and you don't need any suggestion.

The best part of the story is, you sent exactly the same PMs to almost everyone who replied you. We are all here to help you, of course, but you don't have to pretend something.

I hope I didn't exaggerate anything.

Regards

PS: I do appreciate one thing though, that this was your first thread at bytes and you posted it exactly where it was required!

re: am i employable at 37 ? help me please!!

hi hsriat

first of all, let me tell you how delighted i am to know that there are people around to care about! Frankly, now i am really boosted up and it is due to you and and all other pals who took the pain to post those replies.

about the lightning thing - it's a truth ! I got my M'board, RAM and my broadband modem all in ashes - any way, that's a good excuse for me to upgrade the system! Now i am with Athlon 64 X 2.

the 'thinkbig4success' email i am using is to tell myself exactly the same thing - 'think big for success'. I hope an email id i use so frequently is a good way to talk to myself of the idea and in a most repetitive way !.

The point you brought forward is superb - my e-mail id brings a feeling that i am an adviser myself rather than someone seeking help !. I didn't thought of that earlier. Great you said that. Hats off to it and am going straight to make a suiting id like the one you had suggested!

- you wrote - The best part of the story is, you sent exactly the same PMs to almost everyone who replied you. - but how could you know this ? is PM not PM ?

i am new to blogging and may not be using the parlance and conventions properly - bear me please ! and pls pls continue the great support and guidance that you are giving to me friends.

- with regards and gratitude

- kash

hsriat doubts about your ID, other things coincide; I think you got enough suggestion and we’ll discuss on this. Cool…
