Default IE: Making a narrow column wider in a wide table

Hi, I have a wide table (horizontally overflows the page). With
a lot of wide entries, the narrow ones are getting squashed. How
can I set a minimum width in IE (since it doesn't like my
style='width:2in' setting)?

Or to say it another way, what's the least hacky solution?
Help me avoid counting characters and using <nobr>!

Thanks,
Csaba Gabor from Budapest
(This is for an private page to be run on IE 6 in a
Win 2K or XP environment)

<table><tr>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<TD style='width:2in'>this
just has a lot of writing without
saying very much but the words
are not so wide</TD>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
<td>somewhatLongTableCell</td>
</tr></table>
