Default Little problem with css layout

Hello,
I've modified Owen Briggs' proposal for a three columns design with a top
box. Owens proposal you can see at
http://www.thenoodleincident.com/tut...on/basic4.html,
my modification is here:
http://www.seyso.de/test050504/03_3c...lustopbox.html.
The css-file is http://www.seyso.de/test050504/03_3columnplustopbox.css ,
the image is
http://www.seyso.de/test050504/fontimage.gif .
The modification shows well with MSIE 6, but in Mozilla 1.6 and Opera 7.23
the upper margin of the middle box is somewhat higher than those of the left
or the right box. Can anyone explain me this behavior?
And another, more basic question: all values for the positioning of the
boxes (i.e., their width and margins) I found out by trial and error, not by
calculating. Are there formulas to calculate them?
TIA
Peter
