Have you tried using just 'a' instead of 'a:link'?
Same thing, isn't it? But as far as I can tell, 'a' works in all browsers.

versus

<a id="jump"></a>

(which is a semi-outdated use of A, but is perfectly valid)

Some of us even have quicker ways than that. I have a button on my
browser toolbar that shows me the stylesheet for any page I'm looking
at.

At the risk of being shot down for not googling first, which browser &
how do I get such a button? It would be tremendously helpful. Feel free
to tell me to faq off if this info is likely staring me in the face -
I've only been seriously using Windows for six months or so & my
familiarity with a Linux desktop isn't any better.

In my case it's an addition to the Opera link toolbar available from
Toby Inkster's page: http://www.goddamn.co.uk/tobyink/?page=10#tip3
Only works for stylesheets associated with the page via <link>
elements.

Other browsers probably have similar or better methods of doing the
same.

There's also the Mozilla DOM Inspector which takes a bit of getting
used to but which can show you exactly what styles are being applied
on an element by element basis.

Perhaps. But others using the forum might take note. These web forums
that are passing off usenet groups as their own content may start to
run roughshod over those groups, effectively ruining them. I guess
we'll have to see how popular they become.

I don't know about the double spacing part, I personally think it looks
a bit better, but I have a few friendly pointers for you:

1. Get a decent newsreader. Forum4designers sucks. Chances are your ISP
carries these groups and it would make all the regulars here much
happier if you'd post "properly". Chances are, you didn't realize that
you were actually posting to usenet rather than a private forum, but you
are.

2. When specifying widths and such, make sure you tell the browser what
you are talking about:

Do you mean 750 px, ems, % ? Chances are you mean px, so put it in. Most
browsers will 'assume' px and display it properly, but you don't want to

3. It's generally a bad idea to give fonts a fixed size. IE users who
want to won't be able to change it. What I do is this: normal body text
I size at 100%. That way, whatever a user has set for their default size
that is what they'll see. If you want some text a bit smaller, give it a
90% or whatever. My H1's are 200% and so forth.

I assume you're wondering how people find your stylesheet. If not, hey,
it's useful for the archive.

View source code. Look for the css file linked to the page. Copy and paste
correctly into browser window. Voila.

"Correctly" means following all the directory reference rules most authors
already have as second nature. "css.css" means it's in the same directory,
"/css.css" in the top directory, etc.

It has an app. called Outlook Express.

It does email. It also allows you to post
messages 'here' on usenet rather than
through a web page as you do now.

There are better newsreaders made,
but that one should be on most Windows
computers.

You probably could not use it from
a library or school, but then you may be
able to post via ..

That would be true if the width were set in CSS, but in this case it is
just an HTML attribute. The choices are quite limited. Any unit
specifier other than % should be invalid.

It also seems to do a poor job of replicating threads in the web
portal. Replies from its users appear in random places in the thread
(or perhaps always at the bottom?) regardless of which post they are
actually replying to.
