Default CSS bullet image that works - including in IE6???

I am trying to get bullet images in paragraphs and lists to align
properly - so far Moz 1.3 and Opera 6.05 handle both of these cases fine
(NOTE: IE5 as expected does not render a bullet in the 1st case):

which looks like this (taken with Moz 1.3):

However IE6 is causing a lot of grief - I get:

Can anyone help?

I would like to have - in IE6 - (a) the bullet line up with the left
margin and (b) some space - even if it is a couple pixels between the
bullet and the text. NOTE: I know I can kludge (b) by adding extra
space to the image but have no idea how to take care of (a).
