Default CSS layouts in the vein of W3C Core Styles?

Greetings.

Can someone point me to a good source of nice, simple stylesheets, similar
to the W3C Core Styles provided at http://www.w3.org/StyleSheets/Core/? I
don't need anything fancy like multiple columns; I just want some more
elegant combinations of fonts and colours for all the basic HTML elements.

The Open Directory Project has a whole category devoted to CSS layouts, but
as far as I can tell most of those sites concentrate on tricky layouts with
columns and floating menus; many of them aren't even compatible across
browsers. If someone has a specific site there to recommend, please do so.

Regards,
Tristan

Are you looking for syntax hints or colour styling advice?

have you tried building a page with trivial html and experimenting to see
which styles seem to go best with your content?

http://www.bookofstyles.org/ has very nice layouts, colors, etc. It's down
for some reconstruction and updates, but it'll be available Monday 29 (in
the US, that is).

Neither. I'm looking for a catalogue of freely-available ready-made styles
to browse through. Pretty much exactly what the W3C offers with its Core
Styles. I think they're great, but I was just wondering if there were any
more out there.

My content is already done. It's largely plain running text with headers.
I'm now at the experimenting stage you suggest, and am seeking pre-made
styles to apply.
