Default Site review request: www.elac.bc.ca

I'd appreciate any feedback on http://www.elac.bc.ca/
particularly in regards to how the pages are marked up.

The markup is valid HTML 4.01 strict, but that doesn't
mean I've done things using 'best practices'.

The goal was to rewrite a site that previously had
used frames, had some broken links, and was authored
with frontpage. I had to use the existing content,
and the goal wasn't to "redesign", but to "rewrite".

Note:
I'm going to also ask for a review via postings in:
- comp.infosystems.www.authoring.site-design, to ask
for feedback in regards to the overal design of the site
- comp.infosystems.www.authoring.stylesheets, to ask
for feedback in regards to the CSS
Please don't let that stop you from posting any comments
you may have as a reply to this posting :-)

Thanks

For benefit of assistive technology (AT) users:

Consider:
(a) Position the 'On this page' portion of the menu so that it gets read
at the *start* of the page -- not at the end. i.e. So it acts as a Table
of Contents.

(b) Provide a 'skip to navigation' link at the start of each page so
that a user can get quickly to the 'At this site' portion of the menu.

On the Environmental Planning page:

(c) Review how and why a longdesc is used.
(Hint. it should be a url pointing to the page that contains the
extended description)
As you have it now, it will simply generate a link to a non-existent
page ...... and all the user gets is a '404'.

If you still want to use it, consider adding an additional link and a
d-link for those AT UAs that don't (yet) support longdesc.

(d) Don't have a link that points to a .jpg .... make it point to an
HTML page that contains the .jpg.

(e) There doesn't appear to be a 'At this site' entry.

regards.

Thanks - I'm going to start a new thread in this group
specifically to ask about the "best" way to markup
'navigation menus'.

I've removed the use of longdesc from all the pages.

I'm aware of that issue, but the scope of work doesn't
at this point include adding new pages. I'm going to suggest
the client do a review, and update, of all the images used
on their site, and that each selected image also have a
"short description" that can be used in alt and title attributes,
as well as a "long description" that can be used as a caption,
either on an individual webpage for each 'large size image',
or on an "image gallery" webpage. When that's done, any
'thumbnail images would have the alt and title attributes,
and if desired, link to the image's page, or entry in the gallery.

I think you meant that there was no "On This Page" section
in the navigation menu, and you were correct. I've fixed that.

Thanks for the feedback.
