Does anyone have any familiarity with using Python Scripts behind-the-scenes
(server side) to adjust the experience of the visitor to the site?

Yes. Server-side scripting is mostly off-topic for this newsgroup though.
Try <URL:news:comp.lang.python> instead. Followups set.
