PHP FAQ Request

Since there is no FAQ document specifically for this group I have
started to publish one. It can be found here:

Item "General: 4" describes how to suggest new items and changes from
this thread.

How about listing questions that are actually frequently asked on this
group? I don't remember anyone here asking "Why is PEAR?" or "What can PHP
do?" On the other hand we see plenty of "I upgraded to a PHP 4.3.x and now
my form submit no longer works. What happened to all my global variables?".

An FAQ is a good idea though. I think we're all tired of explaining the
"header already sent" error.

Yes, especially when the manual already explains why at
http://www.php.net/header

"Remember that header() *must be called before any actual output is
sent*, either by normal HTML tags, blank lines in a file, or from PHP.
It is a very common error to read code with include(), or require(),
functions, or another file access function, and have spaces or empty
lines that are output before header() is called. The same problem
exists when using a single PHP/HTML file."

That'd be neat if this was an alt.group, butit's not. Check out some
of the other comp.groups and see what usefull FAQs look like.

My thoughts are that regulars to this group should discuss and build
the FAQ here, in this newsgroup, and POST it here. People should not
be directed to a URL at an external site *Ybkess tiy want to say
something like "check google for the latest copy of you don't see it
on your newsspool.

You're kind enough to try to start one, so don't take me wrong, but it
should be done within this newsgroup as it is for this newsgroup.
You start a faq website, I start a faq website, someone else starts a
faq website and on and on and who's is the right one? The first one?
The one with the least advertisements or click-through links? Even I
know not to just click on a link I see in a USENet post. Not that you
would, but some people have been mean enough to do all kinds of things
with click-through links.

Someone can volunteer to "keep" it, meaning gather all of the info
from others and publish it (say, on a monthly basis so it doesn't
appear as SPAM).

As someone else, who also followed up to this thread, said: The things
in the FAQ should be questions that are frequently asked here, not
just things you'd like for people to know.

A good example of how to handle that part is in the comp.unix.solaris
FAQ and the comp.lang.perl FAQ. The VERY FIRST SECTION deals with
reminding the reader to RTFM and RTFW (Website).

Oh, and Chung, just FYI, it's "A FAQ" not "An FAQ". :)

The use of a or an is basic on phonetics. FAQ is pronouned ef-a-kyu, hence
it's "an FAQ" and "not a FAQ." The same reason why we say "an FBI agent" but
"a US marshal."

No, it's not. F.A.Q. would be an F.A.Q. FAQ is pronounced FAK.
It's an acronym.

contacted by A FBI agent who wanted a DataBasix account but I told him

Just go to FBI.gov, or do a search at BBC. I can assure you that the correct
usage is "an FBI agent."

That's a great idea, however this page was just posted this past Friday
and I haven't really gathered a bunch of meaningful questions to post
yet. What is there, are a few questions I thought might be useful to
those who may be new to the language that sort of serve as a starting
point for the document.

I'm sorry you're underwhelmed but the page was just posted this past
Friday and hasn't been built up yet. This thread in fact was posted on
the same day to try and gather some useful topics for the more advanced
users. I hope to have some more posted soon.

This may be a difference in philosophy. I know that the
comp.lang.javascript group frequently refers readers to a FAQ posted as
a website. I've come to discover that such a practice is somewhat common.

Before I even offered this site I queryed readers of this group to see
if there was such a resource. The response I got was that there wasn't.
I am not trying to offer anything as the official group FAQ. I don't
even know if that's possible. Just making it available to those who
might find it useful.

There may eventually be more than one FAQ, but that's okay. The one
that proves to be the best will likely win out if they can't all
continue on.

I agree that it is a great idea. However, this already happens
(indirectly) via fe: google groups. And people are still asking stuff
about global variables. That is why i doubt that all the effort will be
worth it.

You're right, but I know there are those Usenet purists that think that
everyone must read everything they can before posting to a group.
Besides, this is an exercise for myself as well. If I get lackluster
interest, then I can abandon it.
