my usb ports

can anybody help me with my usb problem. i have a gateway, several months
ago, my kids plugged in a mp3 to my pc. ever since then, every time i plug
anything into a usb port it freezs my pc. i went through the control panel
and check the status, it said all 4 ports were worhing. but i still cant plug
into a usb port without it freezing up my pc
PLEASE HELP
