Default Compiz fusion crashed my PC linux OS......How to repair?

Hello,

Well, I recently installed PC linux OS (just 2 or 3 days ago) and I today experienced my first Linux crash on PC linux OS.

I used synaptic package manager to install compiz first and everything went fine. But on my 256 MB RAM PC, a linux system with compiz installed crossed my expectations. It ran like I was on 1GB RAM PC (Windows XP would have required 1GB RAM for similar features).

Then I thought of trying compiz fusion. I used synaptic package manager to install compiz fusion. Then I started compiz fusion from menu. But some problem occured with the display (I dont exactly remember) and then I restarted my PC Linux OS. But to my surprise the PC linux OS logon screen didnt come up. i.e. When we boot linux then starting processes [e.g. init (if I am not wrong):)] start properly but instead of logon screen a white dot comes in left top corner of black screen. As far as I know about linux, this is some problem with 3D effect WM (compiz) OR X server and so I think if I switch to KDE (no 3D effects) somehow then my problem will be solved. What should I do now?

I searched google but failed to get anything related.

Also I am able to log into FAILSAFE mode of PC linux OS in GRUB.

Thanks in advance...

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Hello,

Thanks for the help.....

I booted into PC Linux OS (failsafe mode) and typed following at terminal:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
  2. dpkg-reconfigure : command not found
That means that my problem is still unsolved. What should I do (try?) now?

Also, if I type startx at terminal then a black screen comes up........:(
I also tried modfying /etc/X11/xorg.conf (I found this on google). In xorg.conf I changed "driver" to vesa (under "Device section). and tried loading startx but ended with a black screen.

Thanks.......

hmmm ... i think it just works with deb-based distros ... because you have used synaptic i was misleaded since i don't know the PC Linux OS distro ...

had a look at the wiki and saw that in fact it is an rpm-based distro ... i never used it myself so i'll search with you :) ... perhaps something could be found in mandrake/mandriva related information out there?

kind regards

PS: just found this

Hello,

Hurrey...........Problem is solved !!!! SUCCESS !

@gits- Well, the link you provided did the job (And I am typing this reply from within PC linux OS). And yes I now know that my video card doesnot supports 3D effects and so I will not play with them now ;)

BTW, I had to disable 3D effects to log into KDE succesfully otherwise KDE was behaving strangely.

Hmm....Thanks for googling exclusively for me :) And now I will remember to search internet in more detail before I post something here (because almost everything related with linux is documented by some one or other on internet). And that is one of many features that make Linux (and it's community) great.

Thanks gits for the help...........
