Default re-enumeration problem

I have developed a piece of hardware that has an embedded micro-controller with usb controller. I communicate with the device via Interrupt read/write. On the Linux host I have written a PyGTK app & use PyUSB for the comms. I can connect the usb cable, launch the app, do my comms & terminate the app without any problems. However if I leave the usb cable connected & relaunch the app, the host gets a different handle for the device. The device is still enumerated from the 1st successful comms. How do I get the comms to work after the 1st time without detaching & re-attaching the usb cable? I have tried inserting reset() calls after the open() & releaseinterface() calls in the host script but this causes it to fail.
Thanks.
