Socket programming vs webservices

Hi,
Can someone provide comparison for using socket prgramming vs web services.
I'm particularly interested on bandwidth/traffic usage such as the overhead required by webservices and battery usage for several connection/disconnection required by webservice vs maintaining connection with socket.
