Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with running any of the
growing number of open source social networking platforms - eg elgg,
phpizabi, PHP Social Flies etc etc

No, but I want to hear a constructive answer to this question too.
There is a gaping need for a sophisticated *academic* social networking
platform. Academici is a start. But as
