I realized after posting that I should have used "then" instead of
"than" and I feel terrible about inflicting this error upon the
viewing public.

You use what you like I'd imagine. Both have their advantages &
disadvantages. And while mainly used as a browser, Opera incorporates
mail, rss, irc and usenet too, so one can better compare it with SeaMonkey
then Firefox alone.

How good is Opera's Usenet client? I'm currently using Thunderbird as
40tude Dialog stopped working on my machine, but its interface for
Usenet is very poor.

Decent enough to be my client of choice ;P I especially like the 'active
threads' functionality, making it very easy to check answers to threads
recently posted in.

A complete uninstall and reinstall has fixed it. I'm slightly concerned
that the download version is a beta, and it hasn't been updated since
February 2005. Then again, Usenet doesn't change much.

The latest version is available here:
http://dialog.datalist.org/ (click the Downloads link)
Get the: (dialog.84.zip) Dialog.exe 2.0.15.84 update
and simply replace your existing .exe file. (Save it elsewhere first if
you desire.) I've been using .84 for quite some time.

Don't worry about "beta". It's a popular client in news.software.readers,
and that's a very tough crowd to please. As for it no longer being
developed, yes, that's a shame.

For Thunderbird, go look up how to use userChrome.css. The selectors for
mail-news are in various CSS files in the theme's .jar file.
Below is what I use for Seamonkey. Note that my usual view is just
Threads With Unread so the styling is specific to that. Set colors,
bolding or whatever else strikes your fancy. And do put !important on
every rule.
/* collapsed threads with unread */
treechildren::-moz-tree-cell-text(container, closed, hasUnread, read) {
text-decoration: none !important;
}

As far as I can tell, the only way to mark a
whole group as read in Thunderbird is to right click and select the
'Mark Newsgroup read' option
|
Next, go look up keyboard shortcuts. CTRL+SHIFT+C

It lacks, at least by default, Ctrl-Alt-V validation.
