For the C language, the Kernighan and Ritchie book is considered the
standard. Is there an equivalent book for PHP? TIA. Pierre.

The only "standard" for the PHP language, is the www.php.net website.
There is no "standard book" for PHP.

But if you're a fan of using reference books ("offline" reading), you
might look into one of these:

PHP5 and MySQL Bible:

(D'oh! A bit quick on the "send" button there...)

PHP5 and MySQL Bible:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0764557467/

Beginning PHP and MySQL 5: From Novice to Professional:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/1590595521/

Programming PHP:

PHP & MySQL For Dummies:

If you're not too keen on Amazon.com, just look for 'em in your local
or preferred bookstore.

Personally, though, I prefer using www.php.net/manual.
