Windows is not topical here. Only the ISO standard
C++ language is.
[color=blue]

Neither C nor C++ depend upon the platform.
They're platform-independent languages.

"Best" is always a subjective issue.

Use whichever lets you get the job done most effectively.
Only you can decide this. The languages you mention are
only a few possible candidates.

Language selection and comparison is not topical here.
Try a Windows newsgroup such as
comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.win32

This is an obvious troll. Please, ignore it.

I want to ruin the environment, waste my money, and destabilize both the USA
and the Middle East.

The better is not to fall for a troll and not to bring actual politics into
a technical newsgroup.

The turnip truck I fell off might not be far down the road by now, but I
thought the question showed general naivete regarding the 'net and the
compiler offerings. Not explicit trolling.

I note that the inevitable MS vs. Borland & C++ vs. C# threads have not
burst forth.

However, point taken that on this newsgroup sage advice about resisting
trolling can fall on deaf ears!

I agree.

But:

I think the way you phrased your response could also be easily
taken for "trolling". E.g. my views (which I will *not* express
here) on environmentalism, politics, economics, and "MS-bashing"
differ greatly from most of those I've heard expressed by others.
Many will agree with the implications of what you wrote, others
will not. Some might simply misunderstand.

Possible/probable outcome of your post: Off Topic Flame War.
Not Good(tm).

I'm not trying to flame you here myself, I do find most of
your posts here useful and insightful, I just think that
post showed a momentary lapse of judgement. :-)

More time is spent on this forum trying tell eveyone this is only
about dicussing the ISO C++ language standard than there is giving
help. Why dont you just make a ng called comp.lang.iso-c++ and allow
this forum to be what all other comp.land.* forums are, which is a
general help forum for that language.

This forum is a general help forum for the C++ language. The C++ language
is defined by its international standard: ISO/IEC 14882. Programming
involving platform specific functionality is to be discussed in
platform/implementation specific newsgroups. Unfortunately since 80% of the
posts in here (last few days) are off-topic and morons keep protecting those
off-topic threads we have less and less time to spend on answering legit C++
*langauge* questions.

Unfortunately some idiots do not realise that this newsgroup is not
comp.programming.c++, but comp.lang.c++. Where lang means language. Where
langauge means the C++ language as defined by ISO/IEC 14882.

I wish those idiots would make a newsgroup for themselves, like
comp.lang.c++.42, short for
comp.lang.c++.the.meaning.of.life.the.world.and.ev erything so we could
finally do what we are here for: help each other with
questions/problems/doubts about *the C++ language*. Not Windows, not Linux,
not Fourier analysis, not password cracking not...

Because redirecting the OP to a newsgroup where his question is (more)
topical increases the chance the OP will get an accurate, peer reviewed,
answer. Sometimes redirects may appear harsh or unhelpful, but if you think
about it, it is actually more helpful for the OP than a direct answer or
just ignoring the OP altogether.

Right. I drew a parallel on the troll-fulness.

(And I suspect the OP has been chastized into obscurity by now.)

But permit me to indulge in snipping your views. :->

I do /not/ have momentary lapses of judgement!!

Its story time children, gather round while uncle arquebus tells
another of his fanciful programming tales. There once was a Danish boy
named Anders Heljlsberg who made a rather speedy Pascal Compiler on
the new fangled personal computers of that time. This compiler was so
fast, it put to shame compilers that ran on big mainframe computers so
common in that day. So along comes Borland and says, come along lad,
were going to hire you and sell your compiler. And so was born Turbo
Pascal. Years later, big bad Bill Gates comes along and says, you
know, we should make a compiler like Turbo Pascal, but with a fancy
graphical interface for making windows apps. Will just rename it
Basic, like that language we used to use with all the goto's on line
numbers, noone will know the difference. Well the people at Borland
saw this, and are not fooled. So they have Anders make a pascal
compiler that can make windows apps just like Visual Basic and that
uses a nifty graphic development envirornment also. Meanwhile Sun
Microsystems makes this simplified C++ language that uses a virtual
machine to make portable apps. The portable part is nifty, the
language itself is slow and doesnt knock down C++. Now big bad Bill
comes along again and says, we should hire that Danish boy, he can
help us in our plan to take over the world. So Anders goes to work for
Micosoft and makes another slow simplified version of C++ called C#.
He also takes Sun Micorsystems idea of a virtual machine and uses it
to forward big bad Bills idea of taking over the world by having all
programming languages run off microsofts version of a virtual machine.
And thus, .NET is born. And they all live happily ever after.

Dear Clueless,
Visual C++ is a compiler, not a language.
C# is a language, not a compiler.
I'm not sure about Delphi since it's not discussed in a
newsgroup about the C++ language.

The obvious answer is that the C++ language is the best for
programming, whether windows, doors or vinyl siding. You
asked in a newsgroup about C++ so, I am giving you the biased
opinion.

The best language is one you are most familiar with. Other
languages may be better for different tasks, but you may have
to pay for a learning curve.

By the way, there are other compilers than Borland (C++),
Microsoft (Visual C++). There are also Comeau, GNU (G++),
Metaware and Greenhills. Search for compiler reviews and
pick the one you like best.

Read the FAQ below.
