Default Last detail counted twice

I have created hundreds of reports in Access 2000 and most of
them use running sums. I have one report that adds the last detail at
the bottom of the page - twice. This happens when the detail is not
shown. If the detail is visible, the totals are correct.
I have one Running Sum Over Group and one Running Sum Over All
in the detail section and the same thing in the Footer of the Customer
Group which eventually totals at the bottom of the report.
I searched the UG and found this question posed back in 1998.
The only answer (guess) given was that Access tries to list the detail
but finds it has not enough room and reformats but keeps that
particular detail item and apparently adds it once at the bottom of the
report and once again at the top of the next page. The poster offered
no solution.
The other work-around is to change the height of the footer so
that particular detail line is NOT the last item on a page....then it
works, but of course, that plan is pure folly.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Hank Reed
