From time to time I have posted about the convenience of such hosts.
Typically, they make available an MS-Sql Server database on their
internet-enabled servers (See note below). I (and my clients) have been
using these for a long time, since Access 2000 and ADPs came out which I
think is six or seven years.

I have pointed out as well that the great drawback to these hosts is that
local backups are not available. While the host management backs up one's
database daily, and restores it on demand, the ownership and possession
of the backup rests with the host.
Now, at least with my current host, DiscaountAsp.Net, this has changed. A
utility is provided that backs up the database to one's web-server site.
From there it can be downloaded easily to one's own client machine (and
erased or hidden on the web-server). I have just done this; the whole
procedure took much less than one minute.

Note:
1. By internet enabled I mean that one, or one's clients can connect
through ADO as in an ADP, or any other COM application that can use ADO,
or through a .Net application, with a User Name and Password, or from
one's web-server. Except for the name of the Server, everything
noticeable is the same as when connecting to a local server.
I have used my databases of this type with ADPs, HTAs, ASP, ASP.Net, WSFs
and DAPs.
While one might think this to be very unsafe, these hosts generally
employ very sophisticated intrusion, hacking, virus, worm etc guard
technology. I know of no case where they have been successfully hacked,
provided the user has not done something foolish. This is like any other
Sql-Server Database.
2. I have no connection with DiscountAsp.Net except so far as being a
happy client. These databases are available to any web-server hosting
client. Cost is $10 US per month for the web hosting and an additional
$10 US per month for a 300 megabyte database at DiscountAsp.Net. (300
megabytes is a lot; I got worried that I was getting close to my limit
and so checked it: one per cent (1%) used ...hmmm!). One must have a web-
server host account in order to get a MS-Sql account.

This one is coming from the far eastern regions of the country - note
the time. I often have colleagues reacting to emails I send wondering
WTF I'm doing at this hour of the morning.

In this case, it's too much &^^%*ing caffeine in my pop earlier....

FWIW, I use a host named Brinkster.com and they also will host an SQL db
for you. I don't use that service myself, but I do use their MySQL
service and it does indeed allow me to connect to it via the MyODBC
driver from my local PC with the correct Connect string (the same string
I was given to use from my webspace in fact; has server URL:Port,
Username, Password, DB name). I can also adminstrate my database from my
local PC via MySQL Administrator using MyODBC. All that I have read on
their support pages leads me to believe that they treat MySQL and MS-SQL
the same in this reguard.
