Candidates?
I am currently using UltraEdit v6, and it's quite good IMO
Decided to pay the advertised $39 to get v11 after trying it out, and then at
the checkout found they were adding on UK VAT! No fucking way am I going to pay
a US company to collect UK tax (assuming it doesn't just line their pockets).
I've had it with ripoff Britain where any company feels it can simply change the
$ to £ while keeping the figures the same. That's why I shop in the US and
Europe over the Net.
Anyway, rant over.
Comparable or better alternatives?

Ask them for their VAT regisration number. Or pay, then ask them for it,
and if they can't give one, make a claim against your credit card/Paypal
for fraud.
I had this with a dogy eBay seller, who not only added VAT after the
auction (which annoyed me, but I swallowed), I later found out was in
Canada. After some argument, I actually got the VAT returned.
If they are trying it on, they are probably best not to deal with.

Irrespective, I have no intention of paying taxes on a s/w transaction across
the net from the US. Consider it my way of giving the finger to Blair.
Having said that, EditPlus looks good, costs $30 and comes from Korea.

Well you might not have to.

An even better idea - look at the free UNIX operating system (Solaris)
or UNIX-like operating system (Linux, *BSD) with open-source software.
More stable, costs you nowt.

I've looked at a few eg Vim, but they don't seem as good as the two above.
That's why I was looking for opinions here, esp since I'm writing in C++.

Why are you paying? There are thousands of FREE (only cost a download) IDEs
and editors out there!
Here's a few I use/tried:
Dev-C++ IDE: http://www.bloodshed.net/ [my main tool now]
MinGWStudio http://www.parinyasoft.com/
V IDE & V GUI: http://www.objectcentral.com/ [source available. roll your
own]
Quincy IDE 2005 URL: http://pipou.net/down/Quincy2005Project.zip
Some sites have a GNU/Linux port.
What has UltraEdit got that nobody else has?
Do a search using Google for the word 'editor', and tell us how many hits you
get.

Lots - and most are not as good as UE as far as I can see.
I'll check out the ones you mentioned.

This is always gonna be a huge flame, but you should usually co for
something with lots of plugins :)
That's why Emacs or Vim (or JEdit, or Eclipse) are so famed. Vim and
Emacs are better IMHO because you can remap all their functions and
they have the largest plugin repositories.
Don't trust their feeble appearence, their power lies within their
extensibility.
How much free time do you have? If you code a _lot_ and you have some
spare time now, maybe a investment in learning Emacs or Vim would be
good. They're both very portable over many platforms, their configs are
easy enough to carry around, so you'll have one editor/IDE to rule them
all :)
I'm a happy Vim user.

Now that's a bit of valuable info - didn't know it.

Well, I got severely put of emacs and vi when I used them back in the early 80s.
I assume they have moved on a bit since then...

I use Vim + many plugins and scripts useful for C/C++ coding.

Vim is not a Vi.
Vim is Vi Improved.

There's even intellisense, if you want it http://insenvim.sourceforge.net/ .
An the difference between Vi in the '80s and its succesors (of which
Vim is the most powerful) is _HUGE_.
Vim even comes with a modeless editor (like all the other editors - aka
Notepad style :) ) - Evim, but it's more basic in its editing. For
modeless editing there's also Cream - an entire Vim remap, which is
more powerful.
But I'd recommend standard Vim, because it's faster for editing. A
modeless editor will always use more keys for the same editing
sequence.
Vim, together with Emacs (GNU or X), are most free powerful editors
around (maybe the most powerful editors _period_) IMHO. And it's easy
to turn them to IDEs.
Something you shouldn't overlook: Vim documentation is great. :help
subject, and you've got it. Still can't find it? Google,
#vim@irc.freenode.org, there's an entire community.
Happy coding! |

I have UE installed on my workplace but I use PSPad instead. |

Hello folks,
I'm very interested about this thread started by Dirk and i'd like to
open a possible "fork", tell me if i should start a separate thread
instead.
I'm currently working with MultiEdit, licensed version, in the place
where i work. I do a lot of work on a Windows XP machine, this is my
workstation.
I also need to work with a Linux machine, it's a quite good machine but
it's remoted and with limited bandwidth, GNU C++ 2.95 version on Linux
RedHat. I'm currently sharing directories from this remote pc with
samba, so i can still use MultiEdit on my windows PC, make code and
then remote compile using a telnet session.
Have you ever tried to work in a mixed environment with a "mixed ide",
i'm currenlty using VNC with DDD (X11 interface for gdb) when debugging
but it's not so tied to multiedit (!)
Is there someone else has a better idea or experienced something like
remote debugging on a different machine ?
i hope you can understand what i've tried to explain, the clear way is
to use another Linux machine but in this environ i can't.
Thanks in advance for your reply
Cheers

All I can add to this thread is that the dev environment I'm working
with at the moment comprises;
1) Borland CPP builder which is universally considered to be a piece of
shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit in this dev team. They hold it in such high disdain
that they are going to separate the compilation business logic from the
presentation layer. i.e. compile the GUI with borland (delphi is used)
but compile everything else with another IDE. The switchover is WIP.
2) Source insight which is generally considered very good. I think it's
great.
3) Ultra Edit which is also considered good.
That said I am going to take up some of the tools mentioned above and
give them a try.

Visual C++ 2005 Express. Free download: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualc/
I downloaded it just yesterday, so I am still trying to figure out projects
and such, but it seems very nice, especially the editor and build-in
debugger. |
