DB2 V8.2.2 Manuals (FP9)

Question posted by: Mark A (Guest) on November 12th, 2005 10:46 AM
FP9 has introduced some significant new features such as automatic storage
(which effects the syntax of the create database command). But there does
not seem to be updated manuals for DB2 V8.2.2 (FP9) on this web page:
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/dat.../manualsv8.html

Anyone know how to get the updated docs in PDF format?

My understanding is there will not be a new manuals release for FP9.
The new function should be documented in the Release Notes for FP9:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/produ...en/relnotes.pdf

It looks like some of the same information is in Info Center here:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoc...re/r0012130.htm

When I look at the Info Center page for automatic storage, it says: "This
topic can be found in: Administration Guide: Implementation." So I guess
this is an non-existant manual?

Well ... The manual exists, but most recent delivery *as a manual* is
probably for V8.2 (FP7). It looks like the Info Center already
publishes the whole new section for Automatic Storage
(http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoc...n/c0012278.htm),
which from the notations in the margin appears to be new in FP9, plus
the one little bit on automatic storage in the Documentation Updates
portion from the release notes. I'm a bit confused why the Release
Notes has just that and not the whole new section if this is new in FP9
and didn't exist before. The manual reference in Info Center is
apparently premature until the next delivery of the *Administration
Guide: Implementation*.

Automatic storage did not exist before FP9 (8.2.2) and is not a trivial
change (assuming one wants to use it).

The target of the reference will also be in the information center.
The information center is a decomposed version of the manuals.
So the reference is meant to allow readers to find the appropriate
sections in the pdf. So the information center content is complete.

I actually prefer the PDF manuals. If you know how to use them, they have
excellent search capabilities and are easier to read.

The InfoCenter, Getting Started, What's New, Version 8.2.2, has no mention
of automatic storage.

The "reference" in question is intended to be a pointer to a manual.
There is no such manual *in* the Info Center. The *topic* is in the
Info Center, but since the reference in question was in the topic,
the user was already there.

I agree that Info Center probably has all the topical information.
But at this time, references like the one in question are in
effect "dangling pointers" and will remain so until the next
release of the manual set. That could cause a little confusion
and some wasted time on the part of users trying to track down
some non-existent document, or a non-existent (or obsolete)
topic section in an existing (earlier release) document.

In my opinion that is not ideal, and in fact is arguably a
documentation defect. I will pass this feedback to
the Info Develoment organization.

I think the main issue is that automatic storage is a complex enough issue
that the concepts need to documented in the Administration: Implementation
guide. At the very least, someone needs to do an article on this subject
(haven't checked lately).

The topic will appear in the manual in its next issued revision.
But there is no FP9 version of the manual itself.

Did you notice that automatic storage is not included in the What's New on
DB2 InfoCenter?

Yes, I saw your note on that, confirmed it, and have passed that on
to someone in Info Development as well.

Note that you can submit docs feedback yourself via the "feedback" link
on the Info Center welcome page:

There appears to be no FP9 doc files, or they are late. The online doc
has FP9 notations, so it is there. This is the DOCE Eclipse version of
the doc system. I've asked my contacts at the lab, and have not gotten a
response about the late FP9 DOCE file. U498354 is the highest version
on the service website, and at the FTP site too.
