do I need a v6/v7-adminclient for a connection to a v6/v7-Server?

Or is it possible to connect to v6/v7-databases with a v8.1-Adminclient?

You can connect with the uplevel admin client and almost all SQL will work
fine, but some admin functions will not work.

I don't have a URL and don't know if the issues are documented.

The admin functions in the Admin Client (Control Center / Task Center
/ Journal, etc) will *not* work with V7 and earlier.

The runtime client tools included with the admin client (Command Center)
do work, although with restrictions (as Mark mentioned). These are
documented in the Quick Beginnings guide.
