Hi everybody,

currently we use DB2 7.1 on several Solaris machines. Now we are
planning, to migrate to SUSE Linux (newest version).
I wonder, if we can keep our DB2 version 7.1, or if we need to upgrade
to version 8. How are your experiences running DB2 in version 7.1 on Linux.

How difficult is the migration from Solaris to Linux concerning DB2? Are
there some pitfalls or can I simply install the DB2, create my database
(tables and views) and than export the database (using db2move) on the
Solaris machine and import it under Linux (using db2move)?
Has anybody done this before?

I'm curious especially about the JDBC driver. It seems, that for
different DB2 versions, you need different JDBC drivers. Is this also
the case, when moving from one OS to the other?
If so, is it possible to use different JDBC drivers (for different
versions) in one Java/Tomcat-Instance? How?

Any answers are welcome...

For you it mteans moving from a Javasoft JDK to an IBM JDK.

If you use db2 udb v7.x (64bit). AFAIK, there is no JVM 64bit (even IBM jvm)
on Linux.

Thanks for posting this link - it was very interesting. But as far as I
understand it describes the current situation for DB V8. But we want to
use the older 7.1. version.
Any information about this old version?

Markus,

Some things to note about installing V7 on Linux in general -

1) Look at the DB2-HOWTO from http://www.tldp.org
2) You'll need to install package pdksh (Korn shell)
3) You'll probably need to up the MSGMNI kernel parameter (V8 does this
automatically)

All of this is explained in the docs and the HOWTO.

(suggest you
apply the latest
fixpacks to bring you up to date : you need FP3 to take you to V7.2 level
followed by the latest which I think is FP11) -

However, I'd strongly suggest you take this opportunity to move to V8, as
V7.2 has less than a couple of months of support left (expires March 31st)
and V7.1 is already not supported.

Since you are talking about an OS shift you'll need to use db2move to get
the data across (you can't restore a backup from Solaris on Linux).

And to finish typing what I meant to before hitting "Send" by mistake -

And to provide some cheer, my experience of DB2 on Linux has overall been
a happier one than on Solaris.

Perhaps this is because the Linux sysadmins I've worked with are more
switched on than the Solaris ones, but I don't think that is the only
reason.

My V7 Linux heavy-duty experience has been using Red Hat V7.2, but the V8
installs I'm involved in are mainly going to be SLES (SuSE Linux
Enterprise Server) V8. This is mainly due to the fact that DB2 wasn't
supported on the latest Red Hat Enterprise Server when testing V8.

I've also run V7 and V8 happily on "unsupported" versions of Linux such as
Mandrake and Debian, the latter being quite a challenge to get running as
it uses a different package management system. Obviously you wouldn't do
that in your production environment, but on your test laptop ...

What about the client drivers (ODBC and JDBC)? We will still use the
older DB2 V71. on other Solaris systems but need to access the older and
the newer (Linux) version from the same clients.
As I understood, every new version needs its own db2 driver (can't us
V7.1 db2 ODBC driver to access DB2 V8). Can I install both drivers (JDBC
and ODBC) on the same computer (windows).
Or are there any problems?

Yeah, that's something I found out already transfering data from Linux
to Windows ;-)

thanks a lot for your answers. They were very helpful. U guess, we would
try, V7.1 running on Suse Enterprise 8 (though this is not supported
officially, only Enterprise 7 is) - if it fails, we'll upgrade DB2.
