| | | Hit Counter
I have seven computers. I have several web pages for the classes I
teach at the local Community college. Some of my student complain to
me that the counter on my web page is always at zero.
On 4 of my computer, this is true, but the other three show the AKA
correct count. My qestion is: what is wrong with 4 of my computers and
several of my students computers that they all read zero. I have
cleaned out my history, deleted cookies, and so on.
The computers at school show the number fine. I am going nuts. |

_My_ question is, why display a hit counter on your pages? What
purpose does it serve?
This meme of "hit counter" seems to propagate like the one of
telling the visitor what time it is in the visitor's location. I've
never understood the purpose.

My own hit counter uses a UNIX script as a server-side include
(SSI). The script has to be located on the Web server locally to
my Web directory. That is, my Web pages are in /public_html/
within my account directory while my script is in
/public_html/cgi-bin/. Further, the HTML file that uses the script
must have execute permission set for all users.
Thus, you should verify that your counter scripts are all properly
installed and that their use is appropriately enabled. This is
necessary not only for SSI counters but also for CGI counters.

Are the computers with zero hit counts behind a firewall or proxy? I don't
know if this matters but it might give you some insight, or it might not.

At first I misunderstood you reply to me and thought you were inpolite.
However after thinking about it for a while, , you have a good
question. As a teacher of adults, I keep track of some of their work
by counting the number of times they hit my page and which links the
look at and for how long. I get this information from some of the
school's web page. But I have some personal web pages aside from the
school that I want to know if anyone is looking at them. I am not a
web kind of a guy anbd I do not know how to hide the count from the
visitors eyes.
I use the count to see if my students are paying attention to the work
presented on the page. |

How would that account for the fact that som of my computers see the
proper counts and other comuters see a big 0 zero ? |

No they are not. All the computers are under the same conditions. |

I'm not clear on that statement, are these seven computers your property, in
your possession, in your classroom or what?

Did you prove that this is happening or are you taking the student's word
for it? To diagnose a problem you must first verify that it exists. Did you
visit the site in question with each of the computers and verify that there
is a problem?
