Default epp - ie6 changes file name on download

Please visit http://epaperpress.com/temp/t.html and click on the link. The
link source indicates the filename is

unix.tar.gz

however, when downloading in ie6, it changes the name to

unix.tar.tar

What's going on?

Probably the same thing that Microsoft always does, assume.

I downloaded with Opera and IE, and was able to open both.

Seeing no workaround, I've added text to my web site that users will have to
rename the file when they download.

Sigh...

Add Mozilla to the list for "uses correct name".

If you tell people they have to rename the file, I hope you'll
indicate that IE is the only known browser with this problem.

When I downloaded it, I didn't have to rename it. Give it a try.

Known issue with Internet Explorer.

When a request is made for
http://epaperpress.com/temp/unix.tar.gz
your server's response includes this HTTP header:
Content-Type: application/x-tar

It appears that based on that, IE is deciding
that the file extension should be ".tar".

If you edit your Windows Registry, and look at this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\MIMEType
and find the application/x-tar subkey, on systems that
exhibit the behaviour you are talking about you'll see
that the entry for "Extension" is ".tar". Change that
to ".gz" and repeat the request for
http://epaperpress.com/temp/unix.tar.gz
and you'll find that IE 'does the right thing'.

A)
I have no idea if this registry change is
"the right thing to do", and of course most
people won't want to, or know how to, make
changes to their registry.
B)
I don't know if there are variations to the
HTTP headers returned by your server that
might make a difference to how IE behaves.

IE silliness. Try enclosing the file name in quotes in the Save As dialogue
box.

IIRC, which is not necessarily the case, IE decompresses the archive on
the fly (despite any HTTP header telling it to), so the "correct" file
name would indeed be:

unix.tar

Not in this case. Just the name is changed. Contacted my host but they were
unable to reproduce the problem. I'll just stick with the advisor to change
the name of the download. If anyone's interested, the real link is at

Thanks to all, especially Dave Patton, who really nailed the problem.
