Dear Group,

The Site under the following link
(http://tomasio.laudatio.com/temp/schiepek/index.html) displays as I
want it to in IE 6 (under Win XP) but does not render correctly in
Firefox 1.0. As usually Firefox does HTML and CSS better than IE, I
would like to know what kind of mistake I made in coding the site.

I think it has to do with the "float"-property in the text selectors
(copy, h1, h2). the width of the text seems to be consumed by the
width of the image to its left in firefox :(

Please help, I need to fix this very urgently.

I have to apologize for my behaviour a few hours ago. Based on
misunderstoodings I was thinking, Barbara was making fun of my
problems. As I suffered a little from deadlline pressure (don't know
if there's a right expression in English for this) and - most of all -
of the funeral of my granddad which is due to happen today, I reacted
in an unappropriate way.

I apologized for my behaviour in a previous thread already. Go through
the thread and you may find it.

What really made me curious is the thing about my "broken"
sig-delimiter. especially as i am using NG since about one year now,
and did not change it since then. furthermore, nobody ever complained
about it and in my newsreader (agent) it appears correctly.

Try replying to your own post and see what happens to your signature. It
gets included in the quoted text. It is supposed to disappear. That's what
that separator is for.
Fix it and make friends. Google for it (Outlook Express en sig separator
or something; I don't know, I don't use Outlook Express)

It should be:

--[SPACE]

There's a space after the two '-'s. Without that, the signature appears in
the reply. With the space, it is automatically dropped.

Thank you, Brian. I changed the sig and added the missing space. If I
additionally find a solution to my css-prob, i will post it in
comp.infosystems.www.authoring.css (only ;-)

If you use a Usenet conforming user agent to reply to a post, that agent
will use the above character sequence as a signal to cut out the rest of
your post, usually your signature, so that it does not get posted in
replies over and over again.

As you have already figured out, Microsoft decided that this old Usenet
common convention should be broken in OE, just to set an MS "signature"
on that particular product.

They invented a most inviting form of "reply to message" template too,
where the naive user will just start typing where s/he is invited to do
so, with the dreaded "top post" as a result and, where just about
everything that has already been said in a thread gets posted over and
over again hanging as a tail on the last post in the thread.

Needless to say, if one comes in to an all top-posted thread that has
been going for a while, it is close to impossible to find out who said
what and in what context. It is really confusing and usually shunned by
experienced usenauts.

Funny, Opera does the same thing - the cursor starts on top. It's never
been a problem for me to do it correctly. I feel "quote-fix" patches which
move the cursor to the bottom might promote bottom-posting but they also
promote failure to snip extra unneeded text.

Most news readers do that AFAIK. The problem with OE is that it stuffs
the signature in between the starting cursor pos and the rest of the
message so the sig becomes a "psychological barrier" that prevents
people to go on to selectively comment on the original message.

In the case of OE it requires one to cut out ones own signature and
paste it back at the very bottom of the original message before one
can start to edit and reply to a message.

The problem is not that cursor is on top. In fact, it has been in all
programs I have used. The problem was *signature* on top.

If one top-posts, that is the result, indeed.

If one manually clicks at the end of the message, then this problem is
avoided. If the technology does it for you, however, the result seems to
normally be that the whole thread is included with no snippage.

While tech that puts your cursor at the bottom prevents top-posting and
all the problems connected to it, it throws the baby out with the
bathwater in that the uninitiated user is deluded into thinking that
there's no work left to do.

I'd rather see people develop the ability to snip and bottom-post without
the technology than to install a technology that leads to nearly as many
problems.
