Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on multi-booting several windows installations off one or two hard drives. I've been asked to put together a software testing rig capable of running Windows XP, Vista, and 7, with 32- and 64-bit versions of each.

That's 6 installs total. If necessary I could have 6 separate hard drives with ordinary installs. However, I'd like to keep the number of drives down to cut cost and avoid manual drive-switching. I am aware that Windows does not like booting from extended partitions, so that might limit the number I can lump together.

Is there any software out there specifically for this task? Other than virtual machines, I mean. Am I asking for trouble having so many Windows so close together?

Thanks in advance for your help.

In Windows 7, how can I get Explorer to always display file Created, Modified and Accessed timestamps in the Properties dialog (eg Modified: 3:37:39 pm), without "dumbing down" these results (eg "Modified: 1 hour ago")?

Note this wording excludes obvious workarounds like using a 3rd party Explorer replacement, going into Virtual XP mode or a networked XP machine to look at the file (which works). Also "it's impossible" isn't an answer (because it clearly is possible if you look at the Properties dialog).

I'm looking for a registry tweak, Windows update, a practical patch, etc.

(Note this question was originally intended for EE so forgive the harsh tone... But I just joined here so I thougt I might as well post it here instead.)

I have this elusive problem that I can't seem to get my fingers on.
This is the senario:

I am working at a client's site (am a developer) and they have assigned me this nice little HP-Compaq machine that am using.

The have a domain with a proxy, and stuff.
I have pretty elevated domain rights, admin and all.
I can(should) browse the internet normally without any problems.

Now here's the problem.
Once sometimes ago, I was attaching something to gmail when I got the normal windows request for auth window. I enter my user n' pass then I get this error on my browser

	Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers

The user account 'theProxy\myUser' cannot be used to browse through WebMarshal

Reason user not found - theProxy\myUser

Please contact your network admin.

So I fire up an email (the internal mail is working on outlook) to the concerned party.
I know how slow that dept is so meanwhile I do some little investigation myself.

I discover that when I try using another PC (a collegue's), I can login and browse without any trouble. That I think nullifies the email I sent since this seems to be local to my PC.

So I dig some more and find that if I remove my username from the Local PC (By loging in locally as admin), delete my user directory(the domain one) in documents&settings - after backing-up ofcourse, then login back using my domain credentials (which recreates my user dir), go back to local admin, copy back the stuff from the former user dir and login back using my domain username, the thing functions well again and I can browse.

Another thing, if I leave the PC untouched for a period such as a lunch break, when I get back it has lost the connection to the nwork, (nothing works, Remote DB e.t.c) but the notification on the tray says connection OK but if I try the repair option it fails to renew ip address.
So I have to reboot, which brings everything back to normal exept the browser which reports the above described problem and I have to go through the delete recreate my user sequence again.

As you would have guessed the user support here is lousy that's why I have been on this case myself since it's quite frustrating.

Any idea and help is very welcome.

Regards,

Alex.

Can I reinstall xp without bundled software?

The time has come where I want to format my hard drive and reinstall xp so I can start off nice and fresh and uncluttered again.

My machine didn't come with any discs for reinstalling and it was months before I found out I was supposed to make some, so I'm not sure if they will be just the operating system and bundled software or what, also I didn't have any dvd's on hand at the time so I ended up with the boot cd plus I think 5 or so other cd's! I don't suppose that matters, will just mean a lot of changing cd's through the process.

The computer came with a lot of extra software that I never used so I don't want to reinstall it, I just want to install xp itself. Is there a way to do this, will it perhaps give me the option? I just really want to know what I'm in for before I start. Thanks in advance :)

Also, I have noticed that I have a different product number on the sticker on the box to what shows up as the product number for xp when I run a system information program I have. If I get asked for the number during installation which one would I use?
I do have an xp disc that came with my husband's laptop which no longer works, if I can't use my discs that my computer made to reinstall xp on its own, could I use my husband's disc with my product number?

I got a new PC that came with XP Home Edition.

When I started it up the first time it prompted me to complete the installation with questions regarding language. since i live in Germany I put that into the Regional data but chose English as the language. That combination makes most of the information show in German. I know I cannot change the language on Home Edition therefore I need to reinstall.

The company that I purchased the laptop from did NOT send the installation CDs nor the key code. I really dont want to purchase the OS...where can I download one for free (in English)?
It would be super cool if I could get XP Pro for free, but would be happy with Home Edition?
I am not able to open the regedit by typing "regedit" in Run. There is no error message being displayed. It simply doesn't run. Searched about it online. Looks like a virus or spyware can cause this problem.
