Vace-

I'm an Open-Source kinda guy. If I don't have to pay, I won't. Both Kubuntu and Wine are free.

Wine is free software, there's no need to buy.

Read the last link I posted. If you install Kubuntu, you can download it through the package manager in the GUI. I would recommend that, then it installs everything automatically - you don't have to deal with messy dependencies and configs.

It isn't just a singe file to download. In linux, you need to open up your console (command propt), then type whatever is said in the wine installation guide, en then everything gets downloaded automatically and put in the right place.

edit:
hmmm, already said while I was typing

But why don't you download it yourself, and again wine isn't something to just download like any other file.

re: Building a new OS - who wants to help?

This thread is kind of wandering around a bit. But anyway, I'd like to make a couple of points.
  • By definition, virus writers are not "good" programmers. They're evil programmers.
  • VACEPROGRAMMER, please refrain from asking people on TheScripts to e-mail you illegal copies of software. That is the sort of behaviour which is likely to result in a ban.
  • All concerned, the tone seems to have improved again, but please skip the bickering and stick to the original purpose of the thread.
  • Also to all concerned, I realise it's ridiculous to expect perfect English, from anyone. Especially since we're scattered around the world and English varies quite a bit. But could you at least turn on spell checking, please? (Assuming you're using a real browser, that is, and not Internet dEstroyer).
Keep in mind that some day you may need to find this discussion again, by searching for specific words. "Command propt" for example, may make it that little bit more difficult.
  • VACEPROGRAMMER, if your professor needs software, tell him/her to download it. Why waste hours of your and other people's time doing it?
  • As for my name; I prefer to remain anonymous, thanks very much.

There's spell checking in FF? Where? This browser is getting better with everything new I find about it. I always try to correct my spelling errors, but sometimes it's just too late.

Yeah, I now that feeling. :)

In Firefox you right-click the text field and select "Spell check this field". The nice thing is it's the unobtrusive, background, as-you-type sort of spell-checker made famous by MS Word. You know, just underlines things but doesn't interfere. However, I don't remember whether this was built-in or an add-on. I do recall that I had to download an "Australian English" dictionary.

Also, I've found that on one PC I have to select the spell-check each time, while on another it seems to be on by default. Haven't checked what setting that might be yet.

Hmm this is stupid, I wanted to download a dictionary for the spell check, and this is what I get:
"These dictionaries work with the spell-checking feature in Firefox.

All dictionaries"

Not quite helpfull...

re: Building a new OS - who wants to help?

I'm starting a new OS it is going to be called GLaDOS. It will have a weighted 3D cube interface, and will contain many hearts and cake. I will also introduce a new windowing system called portals. Portals will allow you to instantly be transported to an Emergency Intelligence Incinerator in case of a good idea emergency. However it seems that more then a few people in this thread have already visited the intelligence incinerator, so I'm not sure how useful that feature will be.

If you want to be a part of GLaDOS please reply, we will need to do a few tests at our Enrichment Center with you to make sure that you can help. At the end of the testing, Cake, and grief counseling will be available.

Thank you for helping me help you help us all.

LOL
Then I'll make a Black Mesa OS, then I'll get government funds. Of course I'd never have to complete it, I just have to make some promising stuff and then let some silly lab assistant (preferably named "Gordon") screw it completely up.

re: Building a new OS - who wants to help?

RedSon and I were just joking about the other OS. But you need to know about the games Portal and Half-Life 2 to understand the jokes.

And ehm... an OS doesn't need to be compatible with Windows and Linux, because Windows and Linux are OSses (Killer, please say how to write that :P) themselves, so maybe you meant: "The OS should be able to run programs designed for Windows and Linux"?

Yarr
PS: Why would you call the OS like a country, people might think the Macedonian government made it.

edit: 3D icons and bootscreens are all but good for the performance, you might want to reconsider that idea.

Sounds to me like rotating on the vertical axis and not having them layed out on a flat surface, but with actual depth in the navigating and stuff...

I just have three things to say at this point.
  • I don't know how you'd write it. Maybe "OS's"? Or you could just spell it out as "Operating Systems".
  • What is a prehar?
  • Vace, please stop referring to everyone as "gays". In some parts of the world, that would be considerd highly offensive. (Sydney, where I live, is apparently second only to San Francisco in the proportion of gays in the population. But not everyone is so accepting.)

just a thought about it :) ... lets consider a rotatable iconlike cube ... that stands for ... lets say an office-software ... so you would have the possibility to put 6 icons in one place at the screen ... moving the mouse near one of the cubes edges it will rotate and show you the next clickable option? ... it would be a smart effect ... besides the space-saving function :) ...

kind regards

So using your office-software, give me an example of what each side of the face would do? Obviously one would be open the program...but what would the rest do?

ahh ... i think i wasn't quite clear ... the cube is a kind of group ... so one side for text-docs, one for spreadsheets etc. ... you should also be able to customize it ;)

:) don't blame me for that ... it was just a quick idea since rotating icons seems to be useless in case they don't fullfill any other purpose than wasting resources so I thought they could have a purpose ;P ... except of the eyecandy they could provide ...
